Grisham

|0 remarks
I just forgot for a few days that I was a blogger .. Well anyways .. After cribbing in one of my previous blogs that I have not been doing all that I used to do before marriage, I managed to do one of those ... I read the book "The Broker" by john Grisham a book that I had purchased and everyone in my family except me had finished reading ... ... Its a pretty good book ... Gets a bit of a drag in between ... but you realize why he is dragging it as you move on ... Pretty Gripping

So what is next !?? Well I guess its going to be the Street Lawyer ... My father is currently reading it ... After which I will lay my hands on it.

Lost !!

I lost my mobile phone ... my Nokia 6020 ... I loved that phone ... and now its gone ... All because of my carelessness ... I forgot it in an ATM outlet where I had gone to drop a cheque. When I returned in 5 minutes it was gone and I had nothing to do no one to blame but myself ... :-(
To punish myself ... I got myself a new Nokia 1110 ... Serves me right !!

Today ... my life !!

|4 remarks
I was thinking about it lately ... I used to put myself into lot of activities other than work viz. Singing Classes, Swimming, Reading Books, Blogging, watching movies etc. But now-a-days I get a feeling that there is a lot of running around in my life (no direct or indirect mention to my recent marriage :) ), and I seem to get a feeling that I don't have time for any other activity.

Probably we need to sit down and organize life better so that we have time for things other than "work".

It was a highly lazy day at office. After attending a friends' marriage in the morning (and the associated feast) and a team lunch at Kabab Court on ECR, I was on the verge of bursting. To avoid that, I just lay on my "ease chair" thinking about my life and waiting for my day to get over.

Thinking about my life resulted in this blog and the second part is also over ... So have a great weekend!!!!

Jobs in IT

|0 remarks
I read this article in Professor Sadagopan’s Weblog about Jobs in IT.
A point that he said seemed so true to me ... He said "IT is no longer a “fad” but has become the key to every other industry".

Yes the Truth is that we can't look at IT in isolation. IT is thriving because the IT solutions that are being delivered are enabling other industries to get some kind of significant cost benefit. IT has changed the way different industries are doing their business. Industries that are using IT are thriving and are doing better than what they were doing before. So as a chain reaction there are more jobs being created in all these industries. That may also be the reason why there are debates going on whether IT should be called "IT" (as in Information Technology) or BT for Business Technology.

The chain reaction continues as there are more opportunities for services to be provided to the companies in these industries (including IT). (Eg. Suppliers of Computers, Couriers, Office Boys, food at cafeteria to name the common ones)

Innovative people think observe problems that these companies are facing from their service providers and come up with possible alternate solution options as Business Opportunities. So in essence you could say that the economy today is robust because of all industries doing well ... a phenomenon probably triggered by IT being effectively used as an enabler.

Professor Sadagopan also goes on to say "Of course, IT is also maturing; it may not grow at the same scorching pace for ever. At least in India IT will keep growing for a reasonable time, say 5- 10 years at great speed and slow down thereafter, yet growing at modest speeds"

The above is also true. Importantly the prediction that IT will continue to grow at a modest pace even after 5-10 years. This is true because of Continuous Improvement. We can never say that an IT Solution delivered will work forever. In this ever changing business scenario it is important that the IT systems also change with the changing scenario. So there will always be scope for innovation and also jobs for all those innovative people who will constantly question the way business is done and come up with better ways to run businesses.

Chennai Rains

|1 remarks
Its raining off and on in Chennai ... And it had made the climate really beautiful ... And the last thing one wants to do is to sit in office working ... And especially last 2-3 weeks work had been light ... So I feel more like running away into the rain ...

It would be so good if I could just switch off my mobile phone leave it in the office and head out on the ECR Road (on my bike of course)... Taking a long drive to "no where".

(Sigh) I guess I'll go home early today ...

Vandalur Zoo ...

|2 remarks
Its been a long time that I put up something on my blog ... And I was feeling guilty that I am killing such a great blog that just crossed the 1000 mark in the number of hits ... So I thought that I should post something ...

The easiest way out was to post some photos ... Easy ...

Posting some photos that we had taken during my recent visit to the Vandalur Zoo in Chennai around the Deepavali time ... It was after a long time that I had visited a zoo ... A word of caution ... There is lots of walking to be done ... so anyone planning to go to the Vandalur Zoo be prepared mentally ...

My Niece (Natasha) and her friend (Hari) made up for the lack of Monkeys in the Zoo !!

Cheers ....

Death

Everyone takes death for granted ... Even when you stare at it right in front of your face ... Its like this mouse who is seeing the cat right in front of him - closes its eyes and says "Cats don't exist" ...

Express yourself ... Don't have anything in your mind ... Don't postpone things for tomorrow ... There may be no tomorrow.

GahooYoogle

For all those who find Yahoo and Google search engines tedious and time-consuming, a new website known as GahooYoogle has come up with a solution. This website combines the search engines of Yahoo and Google on one screen. Using a split screen to display the search results of both the engines, this website is proving to be convenient for many net surfers.

It’s been a long silence from my end … But with a reason … I met with a “small” domestic accident … About 12 days ago about midnight while hurrying into the toilet sleepily, I tripped on a small step in the entrance of the toilet and fell down. I felt a sharp pain on my right foot but thought it should be ok by morning. Janani was also contemplating if I would be able to ride the bike to office. There was no swelling so thought it should be ok. In the morning the pain had increased and I was not able to keep my foot on the floor. Fortunately, our neighbor – an orthopedic surgeon – came to my rescue. After some painful examination, he suspected that it was a ligament injury. To confirm that we went to his hospital and got an X-ray done. There was a gap between the ligaments of my foot which needed to be set right. I wish I could have put up the X-ray on the blog. Then the worse part – POP (Plaster of Paris) bandage was administered.
And it was going to be a 6 weeks affair. I was provided with elbow crutches for support.
My POP Bandage!!

I even went to office the next day … to gather some “sympathy” and instead I had lot of explaining to do … that it was infact a domestic accident and not my first fight with my wife after marriage. Well so much for gathering some sympathy!!
At the end of the day it was too painful for me. So I got permission to work from home for 3-4 days when I could get some rest during the long weekend. So I worked from home on Thursday Friday and Monday, which gave me a weeks time at home to recover.
Working from home!!
The whole experience has been an eye opener to me - one which has made me realize how blessed we are and how we take it for granted whatever we have in life. We crib about what we don’t have – money, good job, etc. Normal things like having a defect-less physique are taken for granted. I realized how people with physical disabilities are faced with challenges in doing the simplest things in life. Getting a glass of water to drink, going to the toilet, taking bath, commuting etc …

After a weeks rest and after mastering the art of using the elbow crutches I went back to office. Thanks to my teammates Bharath, Kingshuk and Radhika … life was easier. Even senior managers at office came to my workbench for any work related interactions.

This weekend has been good. The doctor after reviewing my condition announced that I can have my POP bandage removed and replace it with crape bandage. He said I can use the crutches if required.
My leg feels really light now … much more comfortable … Its been a good start for the week.
I guess I’ll sign off for now ...

Will keep you all posted about things happening ...

Till then ...

I am back …

|0 remarks
Lots happening in my life … Some happy … some sad … But I guess that’s life … I guess I’ll hold back the details … since its still WIP …

I have moved in to my home in Velachery … The Painter and Carpenter did a good job but a closer look and you would feel that they should have had an eye for detail … But its ok … I am satisfied, given the time I could spend for supervision … I guess it was the best that I could do … The CD containing the Photos is in the office and so I will post that later …

It took me couple of weeks to get settled in … Set things up … decide a place for everything … set up the right “processes” so that I am able to maintain the house well …

One good thing that we managed to do was to dispose of lot of crap that we had gathered over the years … My father had already done the first phase of that job when we moved from Nagpur to down south … And “we” managed to do a good job of the second phase when we moved in here … Lots of unwanted things that Amma would say, “In such-n-such situation/occasion we would need that” … but the point is that, in those once in a blue moon situation/occasion we would not find that thing … So I put an end to the chapter and lots of crap was disposed …

One of the distinct difference I noticed as compared to Thiruvanmiyur was that it was hotter here … reason being, one, it’s the top floor, second, we are not that close to the sea as we were in Thiruvanmiyur so, there is no continuous supply of fresh, cool breeze as in Thiruvanmiyur … so to “beat the heat” we have fitted a cooler (we had retained the one that we had in Nagpur) in one of the bed rooms and also purchased an AC for the other bedroom … So the summer is cooler now … But still its really hot …

Things are very busy in the office after the re-org … Suddenly there is lot of work in terms of planning etc … Business is also flowing in steadily so that also keeps us very very busy !! I have been coming back home consistently after 10:00 in the night for the last week and a half … seems to take a toll on your productivity after a while …

The other day … I was having a discussion with Jan on Destiny … She was saying, “Everything in life is destined … preplanned … and we all are just players playing our part in this grand drama” … I was countering her statement saying, “What about people who have been successful in life – made it from rags to riches, they didn’t accept life as it is, they fought back and :-) After such an argument I couldn’t argue any further …But I still blurted out, “I don’t believe in destiny – I guess there are things that we can’t control, but there are things that we can control and make a difference”. The thought was there in my mind … And then in between all the chaos in my mind the eternal truth emerged … “THERE ARE SOME PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD WHO ARE ‘DESTINED’ NOT TO BELIEVE IN DESTINY. THOSE ARE THE PEOPLE WHO ARE ‘DESTINED’ TO MAKE THEIR OWN DESTINY” … Until next time reflect on that :-)

And I found a new friend in an avid blogger at office … You should all read his blog … Its Jamshed Velayuda Rajan at his best …

Jamshed: I have removed the setting that disallows non blospot members to comment on my blog … So you can go ahead and comment your heart out …

There has been an upset to my Swimming Plans …

Vinu has got a problem with his ears … One day after swimming he shoved an ear bud into his ear and managed to push matter further in and has partial loss of hearing … When he consulted the ENT she told him that he has managed to make a small hole in his ear membrane and so he has to be away from water for 8 weeks …

Both me and Vinu were very upset … Coz he wouldn't be swimming for a long time and I hate swimming alone … though I was doing it anyways …

Vinu is currently at his Home in Kerala after a Spiritual Journey to Sabari Malai …

Just as I was planning to Update my blog with the latest … I received this SMS from Vinu …

"Hey Man, I consulted another ENT here. She is extremely experienced one and she says my ear is fine and its just wax. So I am coming bak 2 swimming … YOOHOO !!!"

That says it all …

So it will be me and Vinu again in the pool .. doing Chapaak Chapaak Chapaak …

Cheers …

My latest passion …

Its been in my mind for years … but I guess for all good things to begin - the right time has to come. So it came on the 29th of Jan … I started learning swimming … An off-season offer and the company of a colleague (Vinu) from office and not to mention unending persuasion by Jan and others at home to involve in an physical exercise of some kind.

Now lemme tell you that the few encounters that I have had with swimming are once when I was a kid … I remember that I used to wear floats (that ended soon) … and the others when I had gone to MGM Dizzee World on 2-3 occasions. And I have never dared to venture into waters that were deeper than my height … So for all practical purposes I was a novice to swimming …

So I enrolled, purchased swimming trunks later also the swimming cap. Day one was exciting … our first lesson … our teacher instructed us to exhale through our mouth while keeping our face underwater … Quite a start … Then with floats on … He started to train us in the basics of "Breast Stroke" style of swimming … First only the hand movement and then during day two and three the leg movement was also introduced and then to synchronizing the breathing with the movement … We were taking the aid of the floats till day 6. Then seeing our confidence our teacher asked us to swim the breadth of the pool without the floats … And that was a defining moment … When I felt that I could swim … Indeed I was swimming … It was such a happy feeling … Words fail me …

But gliding would get me underwater a bit … And I was scared to keep my eyes closed underwater, so I would open my eyes underwater … The chlorine content in the water affected my eyes … For two days in succession my eyes burnt … quite a discomfort … After that, I gathered the guts to keep my eyes closed under water … And the problem was solved …

Please note that I far from an expert swimmer … Though I am swimming … I am still having problem taking breaths in between my swimming … Its when I have to bring my head up and that's when my body goes down … Oops … Also some errors in my action is causing some lower back pain and pain in the thighs … Trying to overcome all that …

One of my achievement is learning to dive into the water … Head first … I just love doing it everyday … It’s a cool experience to touch the base of the swimming pool in the process and swim underwater for a long time before you emerge at the other end of the pool.

My experience with swimming till now has been rightly summed up in this quote by Kieren Perkins - "Being your best is not so much about overcoming the barriers other people place in front of you as it is about overcoming the barriers we place in front of ourselves" … It’s a mind game … You have to overcome your own fears if you want to swim well …

And they say … "Swimming is a magnificent sport for athletes of all abilities and interests" … So why not try your hand at it … I can assure you … It's an amazing experience … Out of the world …

So … With the widened scope … and more "Brokers" to serve us … life was getting more interesting …

I met this one broker who was actually my Barber … I think he used to do part-time broker job initially, but after his success he now does part time barber work … Anyways he was not all that good a Barber … So I planned to avail has services to see some flats …

He started showing some flats priced starting 12-15 Lakhs and all of them about 10 odd years old … So all of them crossed my upper limit of 5-6 years … They were all shabby TN Housing Board Apartments … But I was amazed by the way our "Broker"
Marketed it … He would say that the flat was furnished … I would go in and find all the shelves and other cabinets uncovered … Then I would ask where was the "furnished" part of the flat .. He would show me the sofas and the wooden cupboards etc (that's what he meant by furnished) … At that moment, I just found a new definition of the word "Furnished" Apartment.

He would talk at length about the financial planning I should do … He would advice me to purchase two flats … Stay in one and give off the other for rent so that way there would be a steady inflow of cash … Good advice but who would loan me such an amount (I would never be eligible for such a humungous amount) and how on earth would I pay my outrageously high EMI ? (I would cover the Loan Part in the subsequent sections ... That's a different story altogether) Well … He wasn't worried … He only wanted to shell out his free advices … So he showed some flats … didn't appeal much to me … Seemed like he was deliberately quoting high for the flats he showed me.

After a while you started getting bored seeing properties. I started fearing the weekends (as I would have to see properties in the weekend only). My mom would tirelessly scan the papers and prepare a list of properties to be seen in the weekend and I would religiously have a look at each one of it. Some of them were really beautiful like one land I saw very close to the beach … The problem was that it was too close. For those not aware, due to last year's Tsunami, a rule has been brought in that properties that are within 500 Mts from the seashore will not get a plan approval. So all this while I was desperately trying to be patient enough to wait for right property and not rush into something just because the whole process was taking a long time.

That's when I called this "broker" who sounded different … Normal brokers that I was in touch with were all "local" category … no style etc … This guy spoke to me in English and spoke good English … Sounded very polished … Informed me about his brokerage charges upfront and then told me about this second hand flat in Velachery … Gave me the details about it and set up a time when I could inspect the flat … Though it did induce a spark in my mind … I was still feeling It would be the same old crap …

But seeing that flat changed the course of events … I and Jan saw the flat and instantly liked it … I guess whenever I take her to see properties it always clicks … :-)

Rest in the next …
